DON GIOVANNI

Mozart’s operatic masterpiece returns to the Saenger stage January 24 & 26, 2020 in a stunning new production created by Papermoon Opera Productions and stage director Fenlon Lamb. This production of "Don Giovanni" will move the action forward to the Art Deco period of the 1920s and 1930s. The sets and costumes will also be unlike anything done before here in Pensacola, with Papermoon Productions hand-crafting the set and women's costumes from paper. While Mozart's music remains the same, this performance promises to be unlike anything you've seen before.

The challenge for marketing this piece comes in two parts. Firstly, the nature of this classic production is of a rapist often glorified in the telling of the story despite his end. In the modern times, the depiction of Don Giovanni as the antagonist is more necessary than ever and ensuring that he is clearly depicted as a villain is crucial in representing the piece.

Secondly, while a classic opera, this production introduced two modern elements: A different era of the 1920’s and avant-guarde costuming. With the ability to conduct our own photo shoot and videography with a local creative team allowed us to begin to tell the story we wanted to tell. Utilizing our singers at the Opera Center and minimal sets and costumes (5 candelabras and accessories borrowed from our local community theatre) lead to an impactful campaign that still worked well within our non-profit budget.
